Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Read Selected AutoFilter Values in Excel | MrExcel Podcast.

Welcome back to the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing how to read selected AutoFilter values in Excel. This is a great question sent in by Mark G, originally posted on Google Plus. Mark has a column with an AutoFilter outside the print range and wants to know how to get the selected items from that column back into the report. Is there a formula or something like that? Well, let's dive into it and find out.

First, let's clarify that AutoFilter has improved over the years and is now simply called "Filter" in VBA. So, for the purpose of this tutorial, we will be using the term "AutoFilter" to refer to the VBA function. Now, there are various ways to use AutoFilter, but in this case, we will be focusing on selecting text items from a column and reporting them in a separate section. To do this, we will be using VBA code, so let's get started.

To begin, we will use the macro recorder to see how the action of selecting items from an AutoFilter is recorded. We will then analyze the code and make necessary adjustments to achieve our desired result. We will also be using the UBound function to handle the unknown number of items in the filter array. Additionally, we will address some common issues that may arise, such as the equal sign causing errors in the code.

One thing to note is that the "Update Titles" feature does not automatically run when selecting items from the AutoFilter drop-down. This can be frustrating, but we have a workaround for that. We will assign a macro to a shape on the worksheet, which will allow us to run the code every time we make a selection from the AutoFilter. This will ensure that our report is always up to date with the selected items from the AutoFilter.

Mark G has an AutoFilter outside the print range and wants to show what is selected in the AutoFilter inside the print range. Excel 2013 Table Slicers could do this, but would take up a lot of space. Episode 1827 shows the VBA Macro used to return items selected from the AutoFilter to cells in Excel.
