What Life Was Really Like For Women Under Genghis Khan

Genghis Khan does get a bad reputation for his brutal tactics and the torture of his enemies, as well as the way he treated cities he conquered. Historians and scholars have attributed his conquests to drastic demographic changes and population decline that led to famine.

But Genghis Khan has also been credited with the great governance of his empire by promoting meritocracy and encouraging religious tolerance. The Mongols were also quite progressive when it came to women’s rights -- though they did some horrible things to women when they conquered cities. Still, they did practice some progressive views once the dust of war settled. This is what life was like for women under Genghis Khan.
