A team of students from Chihlee University of Technology won a gold medal at this year''s World Genius Convention and Education Expo in Tokyo for an innovative baby monitor. The device sends out an automatic alert when it detects abnormal breathing or a change in the child''s position. One of the biggest worries for many new parents is that their baby may accidentally suffocate from sleeping on their stomach, choking on reflux, or being smothered by blankets. This baby monitor can help caregivers keep trackof their baby’s breathing.It was invented by a team of students from Chihlee University of Technology and can send out an alert within five seconds of detectingthat the baby’s breathing is abnormal. As well as obtaining a patent for their innovation, the team has won a gold medal at theWorld Genius Convention and Education Expoin Tokyo, Japan. When we got themedal, we were quite amazed. The team’smonitorcosts NT$600 to produce, which is lower than that of other devices currently on the market. We had to gradually learn about wiring, jumpers, welding and so on, step by step. We bought a lot of equipment and made everything on our own.The team hopes that their device will eventually go into mass productionto benefit as many families as possible.
