Helping Pigs Thrive: How HumiCyn from Innovative Solutions is Reducing Mortality in PRRS-Challenged Herds

As the pork industry continues to navigate ongoing herd health challenges, especially with diseases like PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome), Innovative Solutions is helping producers fight back with a product designed to support gut health, increase water intake, and improve survival rates in compromised pigs.

I spoke with Chuck Woods from Innovative Solutions about their breakthrough product, HumiCyn, and how it’s making an economic impact for producers dealing with health-challenged herds.

“HumiCyn has been a great product for Innovative Solutions,” Woods shared. “We’ve seen a significant reduction in mortality, especially in pigs coming from PRRS-positive sow farms or any operation battling tough health challenges. The goal is to help producers get more full-value pigs to market.”

So how does it work?

HumiCyn comes in two forms:

WSC4 – a water-soluble product, administered through water medicators, ideal for antiviral support and boosting water intake in sick pigs

IFC4 – a dry version, added to feed, supporting gut health through the inclusion of short-chain fatty acids like butyric acid, known for strengthening gut barriers and reducing enteric health issues


“By using WSC4 and IFC4 together, producers get the best of both worlds,” said Woods. “The water product keeps pigs hydrated and supports immune function, while the dry version works on gut health from the inside out.”

The economic results have been dramatic. Woods shared one striking example from a test farm where two weaning groups of very sick pigs were compared:

Non-HumiCyn group: 43% mortality

HumiCyn-treated group: Just 9% mortality

Across multiple farms, Innovative Solutions has documented mortality reductions between 15% and 50% in highly health-challenged pigs using HumiCyn.

What makes HumiCyn effective? The product is formulated with a blend of organic acids, humic and fulvic acids, along with butyric acid. These components work synergistically to support immune response, strengthen gut integrity, and improve water consumption — all leading to healthier, more resilient pigs.
