Delivery workers from Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Zepto, Amazon, and Flipkart are on a nationwide strike today. These are the people who keep India’s convenience economy running, and they’re speaking up against unsafe delivery targets, low pay, and the lack of basic job security.

At the heart of this is a larger gig economy problem.

First, companies have raised delivery incentives during the year-end rush to weaken the strike. More money may ease pressure for a moment, but it doesn’t fix real issues like safety, rights, and long-term protection.

Second, workers are called “partners” instead of employees. This helps companies avoid responsibilities like insurance and provident fund. When accidents happen, the burden is pushed back onto the workers themselves.

Third, while app valuations rise and founders grow richer, delivery riders face rain, traffic, and pollution every day — often with only short-term bonuses and no long-term security.

This isn’t about charity. Fair treatment is the bare minimum. It’s time to demand better conditions and real rights for India’s gig workers.
