Extended footage covers a stretch of Provincial Highway No. 20 starting about 30 km down to the west from Tianchi. The mountain road provides magnificent views into the valley of Laonong River and to adjacent mountain scenery.

Between August 6, 2009, and August 10, 2009, Taiwan was hit by Typhoon Morakot, which brought about unprecedented rainfall and flooding across the country. Kaohsiung saw over 2,500 millimeters of rainfall within three days. Many people died in this devastating flooding incident. Huge damage occurred to the infrastructure, including in the valley of Laonong River.

The Southern Cross-Island Highway 南橫公路, also known as Provincial Highway No. 20, links Tainan City on the west coast to Taitung City on the east coast of Taiwan. The highest point of the road, Yakou, is 2,722 m above sea level. The route was cut through the mountains in the early 1970s, but the highest sections were not properly paved until 1992. The highway was badly damaged by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and has been closed ever since. At time of filming, the road was open from west to Tianchi at an elevation of 2,280 m (on certain days and hours).

Heaven’s pond, Tianchi 天池 and Changqing Shrine 長青祠 are the furthermost point accessible from west on highway no. 20 currently (2020 May). The shrine was built in 1979 as a memorial to the 116 workers who died constructing the Southern Cross-Island Highway.
