The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science hosted “World Oceans Day” on Saturday, June 8, part of a global celebration of our blue planet. The event, presented by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), dove into the science of everything marine, from the importance of our coral reefs and natural coastlines, to the latest research and technology for studying and harnessing the power of the ocean. Partners for the day included Florida Atlantic University’s Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center, Florida International University’s College of Arts, Sciences and Education, Miami-Dade County Sea Turtle Conservation Program, Miami-Dade Reef Guard, NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, SEAC Scuba, University of Miami’s Rescue a Reef, Moonlighter Makerspace and the U.S. Coast Guard. There was something for every ocean enthusiast, including a series of talks by the museum’s animal care team and a special cleanup of the Downtown Miami Baywalk, both in and out of the water, with the Frost Science Museum Volunteers for the Environment (MUVE).
