Sake Basics for Americans

Have you ever wanted to try Japanese sake, but did not know where to begin? Sit down and enjoy a primer on Japan's traditional libation by a man who has consumed more sake during his lifetime than all of Hokkaido put together. You will learn what to look for, what to avoid, and how to recognize when good sake goes bad.

This video is not appropriate for people who are below the legal drinking age in their locality. It is intended to serve as a general introduction to sake, and as such, some small details have by necessity been omitted. These bits of trivia are not germane to an overview for beginners. If you encounter a point with which you strongly disagree, or if you absolutely must kvetch about some minor detail, we ask only that you first purchase a glass of (good) sake for the presenter before putting on your pedant cap to show off how much more you know than he does. He'll happily listen as long as he has sake in front of him, and particularly if you're the one paying for it.
