As Peninsula Township grapples with a $50 million lawsuit ruling involving local wineries, the Peninsula Community Library is taking steps to safeguard its funds from becoming collateral damage in the ongoing legal battle.

"There's a book sale there. We just finished Summer Reading Club. We've got things going on in the garden, always programming, the regular programming, page turners, kids clubs, stories too. We are a busy place," said Victoria Shurly, the library's director. "We're a small rural library, so I am both the library director, I supervise staff, I plan programming, and I am the financial manager."

Shurly expressed concerns about the potential impact on the library's finances. "The library board has total say over their funds, but given the situation that the township is facing, and we don't know what the future is, and we're worried that those funds could be frozen or become difficult to access. So the board has voted to remove as much as we can," she said.

The library, which holds $400,000, is required by law to deposit its funds through an agency like the township.

Shurly explained, "The concern is that we are required to make deposits into a trust and agency fund at the township that they hold for us."
