I ragazzi dei millefiori: the flow’rs of song and story is a new artwork by artist Sangeeta Sandrasegar, made in collaboration with master dyer Heather Thomas. The work explores ideas of migration and the storied history of plants and colour.

On display in the Atrium at Fed Square until 31 January, 2026, the work comprises panels of silk organza and cotton coloured with plant dyes derived from Indian madder root, eucalyptus leaves, and weld and marigold flowers, among others.

Within the fabric, details will appear, including botanical illustrations referencing a 16th century Italian tapestry, the Millefiori Tapestry of Pistoia, and archival imagery of flower sellers at the area around what is now Fed Square, on Princes Bridge in the early 1900s.

In this video, Sangeeta discusses her influences that inspired the work, and her collaboration with Heather and residency at the Australian Tapestry Workshop into natural dyes and processes.

The work has been commissioned and presented by Fed Square, with the Australian Tapestry Workshop.
