Hi I'm Vi Wickam and here's another myTalentForge Quick Tip of the Week!

How to play harmonies...

People ask me all the time, "How do I play harmonies? How can I figure out which note should be played when I play a harmony?"

Well, we're going to start off this week with the tenor harmony. Now, this would be the harmony that is, in general, 1/3 above the melody.

So if the melody is [...], then the harmony that is a 1/3 above it, is going to go [...].

It's not necessarily a major third or a minor third above- it will alternate because the tenor harmony is going to be the note within the key or chord we're on. So in the key of D, they're going to still be the notes of the key of D.

This is just a general idea to get your started, but thinking about the tenor harmony as being a 1/3 above is a great way to get started playing harmonies.

You can listen to somebody else playing the melody of the song, and you can try to play along.

You can use a simple song that's way easier than the level you play at right now, and try playing along using the tenor harmony.
