Der Gross Windgällen ist ein 3'187 m hoher Berg der Glarner Alpen. Er liegt nördlich des Maderanertals und südlich des Schächentals und bildet den westlichen Eckpfeiler der wuchtigen Bergkette. Südwestlich des Gipfels liegt der 2'986 m hohe Chli Windgällen. Am Fusse der bis zu 900 m hohen Nordwand des Gross Windgällen liegt auf 2'028 m ü. M. der Seewlisee. Mit einer Oberfläche von 9 ha und bis zu 20 m Tiefe ist er der grösste natürliche Bergsee im Kanton Uri.
Die Erstbesteigung erfolgte 1848 durch den Urner Bergführer Josef Maria Tresch-Exer zusammen mit Melchior Tresch.


The Gross Windgällen is a mountain with a height of 3,187 m in the Glarus Alps. It is situated north of the Maderanertal valley and south of the Schächental valley and forms the western cornerstone of the massive mountain range. Southwest of the peak is the Chli Windgällen with a height of 2,986 m. At the foot of the north face of the up to 900-m-high Gross Windgällen is the lake Seewlisee located at an altitude of 2,028 m above sea level. With a surface area of 9 ha and up to 20 m of depth, it is the largest natural mountain lake in the canton of Uri.

The first ascent was made in 1848 by the mountain guide Josef Maria Tresch-Exer from the canton of Uri together with Melchior Tresch.
