According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender youth are much more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers. Amy Loudermilk of The Trevor Project discusses efforts to create school suicide prevention policies.

Loudermilk stated, "children and youth are feeling more comfortable with themselves and getting information about, 'Oh, this is what I´m feeling; I am gay,' 'I am lesbian.' And they're coming out at much younger and younger rates every year. And so, when a child might disclose and let people know that 'I am lesbian and gay,' their parents or their teachers or their friends might not be that ready to hear it at that kind of a young age, and they may experience some distress from that."
