It’s finally here. Everything changes today.
A year before I started this innocent looking Minecraft Let’s Play series, I had an idea for an ARG I was going to build on Instagram and possibly other social medias. The idea was kind of a story: just a series of events about a civilization called Vetusia and these mysterious corporations discovering it’s secrets… and the secrets’ relevance to their current world. No characters. No Graphite, no Cross, no Mayor, no voices. But I never got around to putting it together. It didn’t have a stopping point in my mind. It didn’t have the story I wanted it to have.
Then I started Winning at Minecraft. I always kinda wanted to do a Let’s Play, just to keep me invested in the gameplay of Minecraft. And I was right: it’s very fun, and I was engaged with the game. But I knew that would falter eventually; it always does. You can only build so many houses, so many farms, so many redstone monstrosities before you run into the same problem as my ARG: there’s no designated stopping point. There’s no story. It felt… purposeless.
But during my fourth episode, something happened during the recording that reminded me of a plot point in my ARG. I had to stop for a moment and think: could I mix this darker, creepier ARG into this lighter, goofier Minecraft Let’s Play? I visualized the future: how they could intermingle, and I liked it. In the middle of episode four, I watched episode thirty-- this episode-- in my mind’s eye. This was the goal. And we’ve finally made it.
This project was very fun to write, act, and edit, which is hard to come across in my experience as a creative. I looked forward to every part of this project, and I had no writer’s block during it. I had no burn out. This was a story that I loved to make, and I hope you enjoy it too, even though, uhh, I’m the only voice actor. And I set a deadline for myself in the middle of editing so I may not have ironed out all the flaws… it’s fine! It’s… whatever! Louder for the people in the back, innit!?
Now the goal is further. Kinda. There’s a smaller goal in between. The larger story of the series, in my head, has three to four “seasons.” Like a TV show. This is the Season 1 Finale, if you want to look at it that way. Episode forty-five will be the Season 2 Finale, and from there, it’s hard to pinpoint where the next two goals are. But the main goal (the mango??) is the end. And I’m very excited to make everything leading up to that, as well.
