A two-year-old girl from Germany on Wednesday died after going down a water slide in the Croatian town of Lopar on the island of Rab.

She slipped out of her father's arms while going down a water slide, landing on a concrete surface below the slide, according to reports.

She was transported by ambulance helicopter from Rab to the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, but died from her injuries.

Police said it was investigating the accident.

The head of the Paediatric Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, MD Iva Bilić Čače, detailed the girl's condition and the efforts of the medical team.

“The child was brought by helicopter emergency service to the emergency hospital admission of the Rijeka Clinical Hospital yesterday afternoon. After initial stabilization by a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals and extensive diagnostic processing, numerous serious physical injuries were verified, including serious injuries to the brain and internal organs,” said Dr. Bilić Čače.

Rijeka Clinical Hospital expressed its sincere condolences to the grieving family.

“Despite timely medical care and the application of all measures of intensive treatment for children, it was not possible to save the girl's life,” Dr. Bilić Čače said, adding that the child died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Zvonko Salopek witnessed the accident.

“The waiter was bringing me a drink and then we heard loud screams," Salopek said.

"At first, we thought a child had drowned. No one knew exactly what happened at that moment. There were some ladies there, including a Slovenian woman who started resuscitation. We later found out that she was a doctor."

Everyone tried to help as much as they could.

"There was also a pastor who talked to the father and tried to calm him down," Salopek added. "The girl’s father said that she simply slipped out of his hands."
