From the 17th Century to the 19th Century, theorists have used waves of a medium they called ‘aether’, an ocean of particles that they inherited from the ancient Greeks. In the early 19th Century, the transverse wave came into being. Today, we propose that light is mediated not by ‘a’ wave (an abstract mathematical concept), but by an unimaginably thin elongated rope. This entity also serves as the mediator of gravity.
