The Yamato-class battleships, including Yamato and Musashi, represented the peak of naval engineering in World War II. Designed to outgun and outlast any opponent, their main belt armor reached an incredible 410 mm (16 inches) of solid steel, angled to deflect shells from enemy battleships. This armor was so dense and precisely forged that modern engineers still marvel at the metallurgy required to produce it. Sections like the one displayed in museums today—often recovered from wreckage or shipyards—demonstrate the immense scale and strength of these floating fortresses. Yet, even with such protection, both Yamato and Musashi were sunk by aircraft, marking the end of the battleship era and the rise of air power at sea.
