Talks between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are showing signs of progress, though no final agreement has yet been reached.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Monday (September 8) that discussions in Vienna over the weekend remained positive, with Tehran stressing concerns about the safety and security of its nuclear facilities. Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA earlier this year after attacks on its nuclear sites and assassinations of its scientists.

Baghaei confirmed Iran will issue a memorandum to the IAEA outlining its position and expects the agency to issue an impartial report on the attacks. No date has been set for the next round of negotiations.

Meanwhile, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in Vienna that while Iran’s restrictions complicate inspections, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) safeguards remain binding. He noted progress has been made toward resuming inspections and expressed hope for further breakthroughs in the coming days.

Grossi also said he hopes to visit Tehran soon as part of efforts to rebuild trust. He emphasized that ongoing consultations at various levels show negotiations are “moving in the right direction.”

The IAEA chief also updated reporters on global nuclear safety, voicing concern over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which remains highly vulnerable amid the ongoing conflict.
