The Wild Robot is written and directed by Chris Sanders, whose credits include three films that were all nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards: Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods. That reputation was one of the reasons why Lupita Nyong’o signed on to voice the title character in The Wild Robot, but it also gave her a little bit of anxiety. Since she’s done voice work in the past (for three Star Wars movies and The Jungle Book), she approached the recording process with some questions and ideas of her own, and she wasn’t sure how a veteran animation director like Sanders would respond. As Nyong’o spoke though, she needn’t have worried, because both of them were on the same page.

The Wild Robot opens in theaters on Friday.
