Even if you wrap a mug in bubble wrap, the mug could still break. And if you never take it out, it loses the whole point of being made. The colors that muddy through the plastic windows—over time, they could fade. What’s the point of being a mug if a drink is never shared from it, if words are never said over it, if it breaks before it’s ever someone's favorite mug? Who cares if it stayed pristine for years, when all we ever saw was a dust-ridden, bubble-wrapped mug—maybe white, or baby pink, or baby blue

Maybe it longs for the heat of the kiln where it grew—longs for it in the form of coffee, or hot chocolate, or herbal brew. It longs for warmth—last felt in the touch of the person who hid it.

The other mugs broke when hot quickly became cold. The others slipped the hands shocked by sudden hot or sudden cold. Their pieces envy the mug in the wrap, and the mug in the wrap envies the pieces on the ground—as it would rather have held the coffee too hot, or have been held by hands too clumsy, than stay forever as just a mug in bubble wrap. xx
