Описание к видео DistoX calibration kit for cave survey

Here's a jig to make the rotation of a DistoX2 device more repeatable and accurate. For cave survey the DistoX2 calibration (https://paperless.bheeb.ch/) asks for the device to be placed at the centre of an imagined cube.
The DistoX2 'makes' 4 shots for each of the 6 faces (4 to the side, 1 up and 1 down) and for each of the 8 corners. These 4 shots are in the same direction, cube centre to the target face or corner. The important thing for the 4 shots is the device is rotated through about 90 degrees after each shot. The laser beam points in the same direction, the device is rotated along its long axis. With the first shot you can see the reading on the DistoX2. By the third shot, the display is probably facing down, where you can't see it (though that doesn't matter). There are 56 shots in the standard calibration run.

The angle from the centre of a cube up to a corner is not 45 degrees, it's about 35 degrees.

The calibration results will be more useful if the DistoX2 and accompanying sensors rotate around the axis of the distance laser.

The idea is to shine the laser though a small hole onto some convenient object some metres away. If, while rotating the laser (DistoX2), the spot on the remote object stays still... the the laser and the disto and whatever holds it are all rotating around the axis of the laser. Use gaffer tape to pack the DistoX2 so its laser exits the little hole. Check that the cradle rotation does not cause the laser spot to drift on the test target.

Once the jig is built, future calibrations just need the DistoX2 to be slotted into the cradle and checked for alignment. The 56 shot calibration procedure continues as before, but, with no worry about the laser.

Well, that's the idea.

One side effect: The distance is not used, so you don't need a roof or walls. Just a nice bit of floor, and a bag a few metres away to check the DistoX2 is aligned in the cradle.

** Please Note **

This modified version of Topodroid talks to multiple Bluetooth 4 (BTLE) devices. The unmodified Disto D110 in the video talks Bluetooth 4 to Topodroid. There is a separate device containing a 3 axis accelerometer and magnetometer talking Bluetooth 4. The angle and bearing calculations are done within Topodroid when the D110 sends a distance.

Note that a Disto D110 is only good for dry, dust free caves.
Topodroid can record data from any other Bluetooth4 sensors during the survey. Let your imagination go...
