Overview

India has rolled out GST 2.0 with major rate rationalization, cutting down the four-tier GST system into two main slabs—5% and 18%, plus a 40% special rate for luxury/sin goods. While this promises lower inflation and higher consumption, state revenues could face significant challenges. SBI’s report highlights a revenue loss of ₹85,000 crore annually, but also predicts a massive boost to consumption and GDP growth. The real test will be how states adapt to this new tax regime.
