Описание к видео DESCENT for PlayStation looks great in

Hello gamers,

DESCENT is one of those PlayStation games that doesn't look good with the "inemulator" Widescreen Mode Hack in RetroArch. Even without it, It gets displayed in some weird stretched-panoramic form already, and with widescreen hack added on top of it, it just looks ridiculous especialy with cockpit turned on. So I experimented a bit with screen aspect ratios. I have a 16:10 monitor so besided the original PSX 4:3 aspect ratio I obviously also checked the 16:10 aspect ratio. In (RetroArch) VIDEO - Scaling, I set the desired 16:10 aspect ration and in Quick Menu - Options I fiddled with Initial Scanline - PAL and Last Scanline - PAL, because my copy of DESCENT is a PAL version (my settings are 23 and 230). Initial Scanline determines where the visible game screen starts at the top of the screen and Last Scanline determines the vertical stretch of the visible game screen. Because I own only a PAL version of DESCENT, I don't know the values for Initial Scanline - NTSC and Last Scanline - NTSC, but it's very easy to figure out, so if you want to try, then just start with minor changes to these settings and check the effect, change some more, check the effect again and so on until you get the desired result. You can set 16:10 even if you have a 16:9 monitor, you will have thin vertical black bars on both sides just like in the video. Of course you can set 16:9 if you want, but I think the game will look a bit to squished and stretched to the sides then.

Of course not every game looks good outside of it's native 4:3 aspect ratio, but majority of 3D games look awesome with Widescreen Mode Hack (RetroArch) which hacks ingame coded settings to display 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio instead of preprogrammed 4:3, and there are some games like DESCENT, DESCENT II and propably some more which looks great with 16:10 aspect ratio.

Fun fact #1 - Level shown in the video is the very first mission of the game. This mission is also available as a demo of DESCENT on DEMO ONE disc SCED-00456.

Fun fact #2 - The framerate you see in the bottom left corner of the screen is the game's internal framerate. It's far from a stable 30 and smooth 60fps we are used to today, but back in the day it didn't matter. Everybody was happy we had such big PC titles on the PlayStation and everybody had fun with it despite those framerates. Nobody cared, really.

Just to be clear, this is PAL version of DESCENT. NTSC versions are propably faster and smoother.

Enjoy the video. ^_^
