Consider the characters shiftier than a six-speed gearbox we still can't believe betrayed you and BEWARE SPOILERS from Life is Strange, Metro Last Light, Game of Thrones, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Dark Souls and (the original) Tomb Raider.

It's our own fault for trusting people such as Mass Effect's "Illusive Man", who advertised his deceptive nature in his very name. The way he wears freaky cyber contact lenses and leads a paramilitary group named after a three-headed hellhound were also red flags, in retrospect.

On the other hand, when you meet a character with a name like "Trusty Patches", you would expect to not be tricked into falling down a huge hole, at a minimum. Trust no-one, eh, Dark Souls.
