Broadly speaking, there are 2 main types of ear infections.

Those that occur in the ear canal (otitis externa) and those that occur behind the eardrum (the middle ear). Both are common in adults and kids and have different features. In this video, we delve deeper into each one of these.
They're a staple of general practice and I usually see one of these every clinic.

Both cause discomfort and decreased hearing with otitis external also being associated with fever, a smelly discharge and feeling more unwell.

It can be difficult to know whether you or your child needs to see a doctor when you have earache. Always consult one if:

You become suddenly more unwell
If the illness seems severe
It doesn't get better after 3 days
If the temperature is persistently raised
There are symptoms that you’re not sure about
