The fibroid surgery can be done through either the open methods that is called as the one abdominal myomectomy or through laparoscopy, that is called as laparoscopic myomectomy or through hysteroscopy, that is from the birth passage we pass the camera. That is called as the hysteroscopic sub mucus fibroid removal. So depending on the technique that we use, we cut open the abdomen depending on the size of the fibroid, around 6 to 11 inch cut is made on the tummy. In laparoscopy we make small cuts of about 1 to 1.5 cms , and 2 to 3 smaller cuts of about 0.5 cms. One hole is for putting the camera inside, other 0.5 cms cut for other laparoscopy instrument. Depending on the technique we use, the pain and the recovery time depends on the technique and it also depends on the patient threshold of pain. Usually through laparoscopy, 90% of the patient, when we do the fibroid surgery today, by tomorrow they are fit for discharge or one more day, maybe maximum. After that maximum 8 to 10 days they will be ready to work. The recovery time is 10 to 15 days in laparoscopy. In open surgery because the cut is more and the blood loss is more and the pain is more, the recovery time is prolonged in open surgery abdominal myomectomy. So in fibroid keyhole surgery, we are doing some major surgery inside the abdomen, the pain compared to open surgery is about 70% less in laparoscopy, and even in post surgery, we give some blocks where we have out a cut on the tummy and we give some pain killer injections post surgery also.
