Mathematical Practices in Tinnai Schools in Tamil Nadu (South India) , Mrs. Swati Dave | KSASTALK

Mrs. Swati Dave is an educator and a project management consultant with over 30 years of experience in the
fields of civil engineering, education, e-learning, and training. She is the Founder and CEO of The Institute
for the Advancement of Vedic Mathematics, a global charitable organization registered in the UK. Her
explorations of ancient Indian mathematics rekindled the educator within her and drove her to create
awareness of this amazing system on an international platform. She has conducted several Vedic
Mathematics workshops and training programs for students and teachers of all grade levels in India, Europe,
Philippines, South Africa, Lebanon, Egypt, and the USA.

ABSTRACT:
Prior to the imposition of British colonial school structures, traditional institutions of elementary-level
learning existed across India, in both urban and rural areas. In Tamil Nadu, South India, the local
schools were called - Tinnai schools. In this talk the speaker seeks to draw out the structural and
curricular practices of Tinnai schools, specifically focusing on the teaching and learning of mathematics,
and also discuss the relevance to the current education system.
