Oil sand slurry can be very destructive to pumps due to the abrasive characteristics of the fluid. The oil sand slurry (comprised of bitumen and water) is pumped to an extraction facility where the bitumen is removed. When the oil sand slurry travels through the pump it can cause extreme wear to the impeller, rotor and other internal components of conventional pumps which heavily reduce the life of the pump.
