Berlin Ichthyosaur State Park is one of the most unexpected places we’ve visited in Nevada - and easily one of the coolest if you’re even a little bit into history and geology 🦴🏜️

This remote state park combines two wildly different stories in one stop: a well-preserved ghost town and giant marine reptile fossils sitting in the middle of the high desert. Millions of years ago, this area was covered by an ocean. Today, you’re standing at over 7,000 feet, staring at massive ichthyosaur skeletons still embedded in rock.

Here’s what you need to know before you go:

🦖 Ichthyosaur Fossils
The fossils are protected inside a building and can only be visited on guided tours.
Tours are seasonal and typically run during the warmer months (late spring through early fall).
Tour days and times vary by season, so you’ll want to check the Nevada State Parks website or call ahead before making the drive.

🏚️ Berlin Ghost Town
You can explore the remains of Berlin on your own. Old mill foundations, cabins, and interpretive signs give a glimpse into Nevada’s silver mining boom.

🚗 This park is very remote. Expect long stretches with no services.
The road is mostly dirt and gravel - usually passable for most vehicles in dry conditions, but check weather before heading out.

Stay on designated paths, don’t climb structures, and never remove artifacts or rocks.

Berlin–Ichthyosaur State Park isn’t an easy stop, but that’s part of what makes it special. If you like your adventures a little weird, a little educational, and far from crowds, this one is worth the effort.
