The Ptolemaic temple of Kom Ombo stands over the Nile on a small hill “kom” means small mountain and has a unique ground plan.
The result of the unification of two adjacent temples, each dedicated to a distinct devinety.
The crocodile headed Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world & Haroeris or the ancient falcon headed god Horus, the solar war god.
This is why the temple was called both: “house of the crocodile” & “castle of the falcon”
A lot of this beautiful temple is damaged in history, luckily the relief on the internal facade of the second wall has survived. it depicts a whole series of medicines & surgeon’s instruments: scalpels, forceps, pincers etc.
In the ancient world, the Egyptians were highly respected for their knowledge in the field of medicine.
Kom Ombo was also a important city for gold trade from Nubia & was originally called Nubt, “the hill of gold”.
