In the summer of 1978, the French team – Les Bleus – arrived in South America not as championship candidates, but as travelers in search of their identity. Under the leadership of Michel Hidalgo, they brought a generation of young, talented players and a poetic, attacking style of play, dubbed "Champagne Football". Although eliminated in the group stage when drawn in the "group of death" with Argentina and Italy, the 1978 generation sowed the first seeds of hope. They played beautiful, free-spirited and emotional football, the perfect blueprint for the glorious 1980s.
