Planning Ahead on your Mixed Media Paintings

I’ve heard other artists say it too—we love how our paintings look in the raw, initial stages and want to keep a lot of those qualities, but we get to painting and before we know it, those qualities are almost completely obliterated.

If you’ve taken any of my classes, you know that I’m a BIG proponent of learning to just paint—don’t think, don’t plan, just move and see what happens. This unlearning of being meticulous right from the start was crucial for me to learn to paint freely, expressively and to be comfortable with the intuitive process, and I’ve heard many other people say that similarly, overthinking was the biggest obstacle to that. But interestingly, since I’ve worked on nearly 40-50 paintings in an immersive process, it has come to light that some thinking AND planning about certain things needs to take place early on, right after the first layers, in order to meet my objective of having the raw and spontaneous elements from the initial layers showing through.

This is a process that I have not figured out yet, but that’s kind of fun. I now know that I’m never going to ‘arrive’ and have this art thing down, and I know enough about myself to know that I probably would quickly lose interest if that were the case! It keeps opening up to new levels, new vantage points, calling me to a more finely-tuned, sophisticated approach to my attempt at painting expressively.

It’s not about NEVER thinking, but about knowing when to think about what. And, as almost all things in art go, you have to figure out how that works for you and your work. It’s so unique and exclusive to each of us.
