Pool of London is a 1951 British noir crime film directed by veteran director Basil Dearden.
The story centres on the crew of the merchant ship Dunbar, which docks in the Pool of London, close to Tower Bridge roughly where City Hall now stands. The crew members are given shore leave, and soon become involved in smuggling and petty crime in post-war London. The film is known for portraying the first interracial relationship in a British film.
There are a number of atmospheric scenes shot around Shad Thames, slightly outside our core area of interest but well worth watching. Rarer footage shows the buildings which once stood at the end of Jamaica Road where it meets the Rotherhithe Tunnel, long since demolished to make way for the roundabout. The tram tracks can be seen, shortly before their removal in 1952.
There are also some nice views of the Rotherhithe Tunnel itself, the stairs which used to allow pedestrians up to Rotherhithe Street from the tunnel (still standing, near the Salt Quay, but long closed to pedestrians), and some shots of the boats moored between the tunnel and the old gas works jetty, which still stands.
