Muse is an English rock band formed in Teignmouth, Devon, in 1994. The band comprises Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Dominic Howard (drums, percussion). Renowned for their energetic live performances and eclectic style, Muse has evolved from melancholic alternative rock to incorporating a wide range of musical influences.

The band's debut album, "Showbiz," was released in 1999, highlighting Bellamy's distinctive falsetto and a melancholic rock style. Their second album, "Origin of Symmetry" (2001), expanded their sound with wider instrumentation and classical influences, earning critical acclaim and solidifying their reputation for dynamic live shows.

In 2003, Muse released "Absolution," which further integrated classical elements, notably with strings on tracks like "Butterflies and Hurricanes." This album marked the beginning of a streak of seven consecutive UK number-one albums. "Black Holes and Revelations" (2006) introduced electronic and pop elements, with the hit single "Supermassive Black Hole," propelling Muse to greater international success.

Their subsequent albums, "The Resistance" (2009) and "The 2nd Law" (2012), explored themes of government oppression and civil uprising, reinforcing their status as major stadium performers worldwide. "Drones" (2015), a concept album about drone warfare, saw a return to a harder rock sound and topped the US Billboard 200. "Simulation Theory" (2018) featured prominent synthesizers and drew inspiration from science fiction and the simulation hypothesis. Their ninth album, "Will of the People" (2022), combined various genres and themes from their previous work.

Muse's accolades include two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, five MTV Europe Music Awards, and eight NME Awards. In 2012, they received the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement. As of October 2022, Muse had sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

History

Early Years (1994–1997):
Muse's origins trace back to their school days at Teignmouth Community College. Matt Bellamy joined Dominic Howard's band, Carnage Mayhem, which later became Gothic Plague. Chris Wolstenholme, initially the drummer for Fixed Penalty, joined as bassist after taking up bass lessons. The band went through several name changes, becoming Rocket Baby Dolls and adopting a goth-glam image. They won a local battle of the bands in 1994, smashing their equipment in a symbolic act of protest.

Following their unexpected victory, the band members quit their jobs, took themselves more seriously, and adopted the name Muse. They moved away from Teignmouth, choosing a short, impactful name that they felt looked good on posters and reflected the idea of being 'summoned up' like inspirational spirits during emotional times. Muse's early history laid the foundation for their rise to international acclaim and their dynamic evolution in the rock music scene.
