Three very simple things you can do to save yourself from being scammed by a company or person.
 
I am not saying these are the only things you can and should do, for example personal recommendations from people you know often help, looking at reviews on social media etc.
 
But if people did some simple checks then the risks of being defrauded are lowered.
 
Now two of the websites I am going to show you are UK specific.
 
If you are watching from outside of the UK then pop a message in the comments and I will do a follow up about international searches.
 
 
1. A Google search using the company (or persons) name and a location, use speech marks, this is known as exact phrase searching, it will limit the results, you could also add other words to the search, for example. REVIEWS
 
 
2. Companies House, you can search by company name or director name, take a look at when the company was incorporated who the directors and owners are. NOTE - there is no register of sole traders in the UK, so you might have to do more work on Google.
 
3. The Insolvency Register, now being insolvent doesn’t necessarily make you a bad person, hard times can fall upon any of us. But in conjunction with the other searches you may get a better picture of who you are dealing with.
 
There are of course other things that you can do.
