A pioneer of Maritime craft beer, Hanshaus Brewery began in 1984 when Hans Westner, along with his brother Hermann and their family, emigrated from Bavaria to Moncton. Their aim was to realize Hans' dream of crafting traditional German-style lager, adhering to the "Reinheitsgebot," or "purity law," which has governed Bavarian brewing standards since 1516, permitting only barley, hops, and water in the beer-making process.

Following the establishment of a modest facility in Dieppe, the brewery began operations on a small scale, producing approximately 3,000 hectolitres in its inaugural year. While there was encouraging growth in Nova Scotia and Maine, the response in New Brunswick was slow. Moosehead dominated the local market, presenting significant competition. Although they garnered a small group of enthusiasts and aficionados, penetrating the mainstream market proved difficult.

Compounding their difficulties, the brewery encountered additional obstacles. Provincial regulations concerning disposable bottles posed a potential financial burden, and concurrently, Hermann became seriously ill, necessitating the brewery's closure in 1991/'92. Hermann's family subsequently returned to Bavaria in 1991, and Hans' family followed a year later, where Hans continued his esteemed career as a respected brewmaster in Germany, providing consultancy for prominent breweries before ultimately enjoying a well-deserved retirement.

Hanshaus is fondly remembered and is regarded as a pioneer in the field of craft brewing of quality beers and ales—an industry that continues to climb in popularity today in Atlantic Canada.
