Function Dedicated Network Deployment Model in DPU/IPU-Like Device Across Composable Disaggregated Infrastructure - Hidetsugu (Hyde) Sugiyama, Red Hat

We are in the middle of hardware evolution. More domain specific DPU/IPU-like hardware architecture will be innovated rather than main-CPU centric architecture as we are seeing the end of Moore's Law and PCIe bus also seems not be getting faster in near future at the same pace. In the open source community, the Open Programmable Infrastructure(OPI) project has been established this year. The project aims to explore and expand the concept of programmable infrastructure using community-driven, standards-based, open ecosystems for next generation architectures and frameworks based on DPU/IPU-like technologies. On the other hand, Innovative Optical and Wireless Network(IOWN) Global Forum, which is one of cross-industries communities, introduced a function dedicated network over all-photonics network to try to reduce energy consumption. The IOWN’s function dedicated network is one of target use cases in the OPI project. This session elaborates system architecture in reducing CPU consumption and how Linux and Kubernetes runs on DPU/IPU to enable the function dedicated network in cloud native composable disaggregated Infrastructure, and also discuss what we are still missing in software strategy.
