Much like the previous three games, Trails of Cold Steel IV on PC is an excellent port; the same launcher we’re used to is back, with lots of customizable settings, ranging a wide variety of PC setups with very portable devices at the very bottom, thanks to that “Portable” graphics preset.
Those of you who’ve played the previous game, know that both these games were designed as native PS4 games, so the graphical demands are higher than in the first two games and, on the PC, thanks to some really high end settings like Percentage-Closer Soft Shadows (PCSS), HBAO+ and Multi Sample Anti-Aliasing, combined with Transparency Supersampling, and the ability to do DSR downsampling, this game can get quite demanding on the system, especially the GPU, in certain areas of the game.
Such areas, like in Cold Steel III, include dense forest like Isthmia Grand Forest, which makes a comeback for Cold Steel IV, and MSAA really does affect vegetation a lot, making it look way smoother but also exponentially increasing the GPU loads, so be careful when setting up your settings so you can still achieve 60 FPS in those places.
Other than that, still great gamepad controls customization, and keyboard and mouse too, as usual, and we can choose Xbox, Dualshock, Switch, Stadia, or Mouse and Keyboard prompts, all from the launcher.
Ports from console games to PC don’t really get any better than this, it ticks all the boxes that one can expect, and the stuff that’s actually missing, like Temporal Anti-Aliasing, lies more on the original developers, Nihon Falcom, since the current game engine is an updated version of the one used for the Vita and PS3 games. Future games may get the actual technical boost, as we’ve seen with Kuro No Kiseki, but that’s still far away from making it into western PCs, for sure.
All in all…great port, for a great game in this amazing series and, as usual, I hope this can be useful to any of you, and I’ll see you next time : )
