Urban and Rural Development Minister James Sankwasa said his office will not recognise applications from chiefs who have no proof of lineage or land to lead their subjects.

He said this at the Zeraua Traditional Authority White Flag commemoration, marking the bravery of Chief Wilhelm Zeraeua against the German colonial occupation during the 19th century at Omaruru.

Sankwasa, in his caution, said there is concern about the mushrooming of traditional authorities in the country. 

Currently, there are 53 traditional authorities, compared to the 34 that existed after independence.

"My office will only accept and approve and consider an application where an applicant proves that you have your own land, your own area of jurisdiction, your own separate language from the next person, and your own separate culture from the next person. You are proving that you are different from the next community."

The minister blames the lack of development in their areas on factions and disputes over who should take over a throne or chieftainship.

"The things of the chieftainship in this country are destroying the unity we require in this country. We are creating more destabilisation of the communities than unifying the community, and we cannot continue on this trajectory."

He also cautioned traditional authorities to continue fighting against drug and alcohol abuse among the youth.

Ombara Manase Christian Zeraeua wants the country to unite and support the demand for compensation from the German Government regarding the genocide agenda.

"We say to all of you here, support us in our just struggle to restore justice. Ultimately, what benefits us will also benefit all of you. We are talking about building roads. It's our national issue here. Let's have your support everywhere, from the corners of this country."

He reaffirmed the continued cordial relationship with the government and the development and growth of the area of jurisdiction.

Erongo Governor, Natalia !Goagoses commended the Zeraeua Traditional Authority for maintaining peace and unity and safeguarding the customary practices.

"Let us continue to safeguard peace and stability among the Zeraeua community like you have been doing over the past years. Let us safeguard. Protect peace, unity, and stability."

The commemoration was held under the theme "Youth participation in the struggle for restorative justice and contribution towards the development of our country through preservation and promotion of our culture".
