If you are a Naruto fan like I am, I’m pretty sure you’ve practiced their hand seals for a jutsu. But of course, you will not have fire coming from your mouth or lightning sparking from your hands.

What’s interesting though is that the real ninja in history actually did these hand signs.

But what were they really for?

These ninja hand seals are called 九字印 Kuji-in (nine hand seals), and they were not for performing any jutsu, but for personal mental concentration and autosuggestion.

The missions the ninja were given obviously could lead them to death, so by performing 九字印 they prepared their minds for anything that could happen.

This concept comes from the hand seals that 修験者 Shugenja, Buddhist monks who did rigorous training in the mountains, did before entering the mountains to create a barrier within their hearts to protect themselves from demons.
