▪︎ Rudrapalash, African Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata) in Trumpet Vine Family (Bignoniaceae) native to Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia

Spathodea from spathe 'blade' & oida 'like' referring to its spathe-like, boat-shaped Calyx. Specific Epithet campanulata 'bell-shaped' referencing its large, Tulip-like, bell-shaped flowers. African indicates that tree is native to tropical dry forests of Africa.
& 'tulip tree' refers to flowers' resemblance to shape of a tulip, specifically their curved, flattened, tulip-like shape. Rudrapalash from Bengali words 'Rudra' refers to Hindu deity Shiva & 'Palash' due to its flower's resemblance to flame-colored flowers of Palash Tree (Butea monosperma), though it is a different species. Other common names, such as 'Fountain Tree' or 'Squirt Tree' arise from immature, horn-shaped flower buds that contain water which can be squirted for play by children.

A large, upright tree, typically growing 7-35 m tall with a round, dense, spreading crown. Trunk is stout, sometimes slightly buttressed. Young bark is pale Grey-Brown & smooth, becoming Grey-Black, scaly, & vertically/horizontally cracked with age. Branches are thick, with conspicuous lenticels (small corky spots).

Leaves are large (up to 50 cm long), oppositely arranged & odd-pinnately compound (imparipinnate). Each leaf has 9-19 leaflets (5-7 pairs plus a terminal one). Leaflets are oblong-elliptic, dark Green above & lighter Green below, with entire (smooth) margins & pointed tips (acuminate apex). They have prominent Yellow midribs & veins & typically feature glandular swellings at base of lamina.

Large, showy flowers are borne in dense, terminal, corymb-like racemes (clusters) at branch tips. Distinctive, horn-shaped, velvety, Olive-Brown buds are curved upwards & contain a small amount of water, which can be squirted (earning it nickname 'squirt tree').
● Calyx: Spathe-like (blade-shaped), leathery, Brownish-Green & splits along one side as flower opens.
● Corolla: Large, bell-shaped (campanulate), typically bright Reddish-Orange or Crimson (rarely Yellow varieties exist), with a Yellow throat & crinkled (crisped) margins. They are bisexual & zygomorphic (bilaterally symmetrical).
● Stamens & Pistil: 4 functional Stamens are present, along with a long Style & a 2-lipped Stigma.

Fruit is a dark Brown, woody, elongated capsule (pod), 15-30 cm long, which points upwards & outwards above foliage. It is somewhat flattened & angular. Mature capsule splits open into 2 boat-shaped valves. Pods release numerous (around 500) small, flat, thin, paper-like seeds, each surrounded by a large, transparent, membranous wing for wind dispersal.
