TECO awards for Morakot relief aid

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, TECO-New York, recently held an appreciation ceremony to honor many of the kind donations from the overseas Chinese community to Typhoon Morakot relief in Taiwan. 100 Chinese organizations attended, and a certificate was especially presented to Tzu Chi for its exceptional response to the crisis, and tireless assistance to Typhoon Morakot survivors.
On the busy streets in the city borough of Manhattan, New York, walk people of all ethnicities and religious backgrounds. And this is where the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office is too.

Today, a tea ceremony is being held by the Cultural Division to thank roughly 100 overseas Chinese for their generous contributions to the 8/8 disaster. Believing blood is thicker than water, one group of Taiwanese students studying abroad even travelled almost seven hours from the state of Connecticut just to donate 600USD.

TECO director, Gao Zhenqun:"The students offered all they had. The donation was only 600USD it showed that people from Taiwan, apart from caring about Taiwan, can also show Great Love, because blood is thicker than water."

Tzu Chi is also recognized for excellence in emergency relief assistance to disaster survivors.

Tzu Chi USA Headquarters deputy executive director, Chen Jihong and a New Jersey volunteer accept the certificate of appreciation on-behalf of the Buddhist NGO. Although in office for just three months, TECO director Gao Zhenqun knows the award reaffirms Tzu Chi's international reputation.

TECO director, Gao Zhenqun:"I lived abroad before in other disaster-stricken places. Of course I don't' want to see disasters happen, but during difficult times, under the guidance of Master Cheng Yen, Tzu Chi volunteers were always the first rescuers to arrive at the site and the last to leave."

However, the award for having the biggest heart goes out to all the attendees because as fellow countrymen, all hope for peace in the heartland.
