Here i give an overview of the most important infrared space telescopes and their concepts. They vary in their orbits (around the Earth or the Sun), their detectors, cooling, wavelength range and their main purpose. In the beginning, they were relatively small telescopes, reaching a diameter of 6.5m in the James Webb telescope. Infrared astronomy satellites grew more and more specialised over time, using Ritchey Chretien telescopes first, now sometimes Korsch telescopes (3-mirror anastigmats). Larger (solid mirror) telescopes could be started in the future, but the cooling stays a challenge, especially if You want to cool not only the sensor, but also the mirrors of the telescope (see experiences with the Euclid telescope). The importance of infrared telescopes goes even beyond astrophysics, because they help to search for water, and ultimately for life in other parts of the universe. The advantage on Earth-bound infrared telescopes is that they work 24/7 and in a large range of wavelengths. A disadvantage to telescopes working in the visual is that the resolution is smaller for a given size (diameter) of the telescope.
