IMF and World Bank forgive debt for Democratic Republic of Congo. As part of an initiative to assist highly indebted countries that have made strides towards economic and governing reforms, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank representatives on Thursday, July 1 approved the waiving of US$12.3 billion in debt for the Democratic Republic of Congo. This announcement, coming in the same week as the 50th anniversary of autonomy for the country, will relieve the government of approximately 90% of its total external debt as well as US$300 million in annual repayments.
