Rob Hirst, the explosive drummer and songwriter whose rhythms drove the political heart of Midnight Oil, has died at the age of 70.

A founding member, Hirst’s ferocious energy and complex beats defined the band’s sound, propelling global anthems like Beds Are Burning and The Power and the Passion. Famous for his kinetic stage presence and iconic water-tank percussion, he was also a gifted lyricist who fiercely championed Indigenous rights and environmental justice.

Hirst passed peacefully on Jan. 20, 2026, following a brave three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. His bandmates mourned the loss of their brother, describing him as "a glimmer of tiny light in the wilderness." Survived by his wife, Lesley, and three daughters, Hirst leaves an indelible legacy of musical brilliance and unwavering activism. He was the unshakeable engine of Australia’s most fearless band.
