Criticism has been raised over the criminal investigation into US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

Three former heads of the US central bank are calling it a bid to undermine the Federal Reserve’s independence.

US Senate Republicans are also raising concerns the inquiry will impact confidence in the central bank.

The US Justice Department will investigate the central bank’s renovation of its Washington headquarters and whether the banking executive lied to Congress about the scope of the project.

“The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public rather than following the preferences of the President,” Mr Powell said.
