John Henry Anderson (1814–1874) Scottish magician.
Anderson helped bring the art of magic from street performances into theatres
Sir Walter Scott is said to have given him the stage name, The Great Wizard of the North.
Anderson declared: "It is the duty of all magicians to give entertainment,"
If the effect was not enthusiastically received, Anderson would remove it from his act.
One of the earliest magicians to attain a high level of world renown.
1824 (10) Orphaned
1830 (16) Performer with a travelling dramatic company
1831 (17) Began performing magic
1837 (23) Put a touring show together, which lasted for three years.
1840 (26) Anderson settled in London, opening the New Strand Theatre.
1845 (31) The completion of Anderson's second theatre, the City Theatre in Glasgow. In November, the theatre burned only four months after opening, and Anderson's financial losses were considerable.
1846 (32) Through the aid of his show business friends, Anderson launched a new show at London's Covent Garden Theatre.
1847 (33) Toured Europe traveling to Hamburg, Stockholm, and St. Petersburg, where he performed for Czar Nicholas I
1849 (35) Anderson returned to London to perform for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
1850 (36) Anderson toured America, Canada, Australia, and Hawaii.
1853 (39) In Boston, an illusion involving Anderson's dispensing of various alcoholic beverages to the audience caused a legal controversy regarding temperance in that city.
1859 (45) Another world tour.
1862 (48) at the age of eighteen, John Henry Jr. left his father's troupe and began his own independent career as a conjuror. This started a bitter feud between father and son, and the two never spoke again.
1866 (52) World Tour
In 1874 (60), Anderson died at the Fleece Hotel in Darlington, County Durham.
He was buried next to his mother in Aberdeen.
Harry Houdini, who was born in the same year as Anderson's death, revered Anderson as one of his inspirations and in 1909 arranged for the upkeep of the gravesite, which had fallen into disrepair.
