A Fulton County judge has sentenced Julian Conley to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 25 years for the 2020 shooting death of 8-year-old Secoriea Turner in Atlanta, Georgia.

The verdict and sentencing bring a tragic chapter to a close nearly five years after the chaotic events of July 4, 2020, when an SUV carrying Secoriea and her mother came upon an armed barricade near University Avenue, close to the former Wendy’s site where Rayshard Brooks was shot weeks earlier.

Prosecutors said Conley and at least one other person opened fire on the vehicle, striking Secoriea, who was in the backseat. The judge described the scene as a “massive show of force at an illegal barricade,” saying Conley’s actions displayed a reckless disregard for human life.

“You didn’t have to know there was a child in that car,” the judge said. “You fired on a vehicle you knew was carrying people. It’s a miracle more children weren’t killed that night.”

Secoriea’s parents, Charmaine Turner and Secoriey Williamson, addressed the court, expressing their ongoing grief.

“My baby died,” her mother said tearfully.
“I forgive her, but I don’t forgive him,” her father added, responding to an apology from Conley’s mother.

The family also vowed to continue their civil claims, arguing that authorities failed to properly manage the armed barricade where the deadly shooting took place.

Conley’s mother, a former law enforcement instructor, told the court her son was “truly sorry for the loss of Secoriea Turner” but maintained that he did not fire the fatal shot. His defense team says they plan to appeal the conviction, arguing the jury’s verdict was based on incomplete evidence.

Outside the courthouse, Conley’s mother said she plans to start a nonprofit organization to raise awareness about conditions inside the Fulton County Jail, where her son was held for nearly five years awaiting trial.
