U.S. immigration lawyer Sheryl Winarick has a unique perspective of migrants and refugees, based on years of personal and professional experience. Still, she catches herself under the influence of dominant narratives portrayed by mainstream media. She challenges us - as she challenges herself - to be brave enough to talk with people in our communities instead of judging individuals by group stereotypes or generalizations. Personal interaction helps to build understanding, reduce fear, and foster the sense of security we all desire.

Sheryl Winarick is an immigration lawyer based in Washington, DC and Austin, TX. Her clients include organizations like Oxfam International and TED, small businesses and start-ups, as well as individuals and families from all over the world. She is an Aspen Institute Scholar (2014) and serves on the HIAS Public Policy Committee. Sheryl recently completed the TED Residency in NYC.
