LESSONS LEARNED:
I tried a different fuel mix on my hoop this time: 50/50 white gas/lamp oil (instead of the usual 100% white gas) to make my wicks burn longer and match the song length. This is the mix I use on my more static/non-spinning fire tools such as fans, belt, palm torches because a) the burn temperature is lower, and since the tools are static (in my hand) and usually the wicks are closer to me, it keeps my hands and arms from getting burned. b) Static tool wicks are usually smaller so they absorb less fuel and burn for less time. However I did not anticipate a) how much harder it would be to light all the wicks by hand transfer with that mix of fuel (hence I resorted to my safety's lighter for most) and b) that the fuel would drip onto the hoop and make it so slippery due to the lamp oil! c) worst of all, that my hands would be oily and slippery from trying to do hand transfers! Therefore this performance was not as polished as most, and had fewer hand tricks. That's also why I kept wiping my hands on my costume, to get the oil off! I was able to work that into sexy dance moves most times, but you can catch me being super obvious about it around 0:30 lol. Oh the never-ending learning experience. Another reason to do testing before performing on stage, if making any changes. Fire performance requires a lot of trial and error to get it right, match song lengths and cues, etc. Still turned out well though!
Maybe I just need to get bigger wicks for my fire hoop. ;)
